I’m under pressure to devalue Naira – Buhari

It is exactly one year since Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Ahead of the official commemoration of his ascension to power, Buhari spoke with some journalists on the issues that have dominated his reign. Excerpts:

Looking at the last one year, how would you assess what has happened in terms of your expectations when you took office, the challenges you met and the progress made or lack of it?

I am sure you will recall that during our campaign, we identified three problems for our country. First was security — the situation especially in the North-East then. Second was the economy — unemployment; and third was corruption. I am sure you can recall that these were what we identified.

In the North-East, when we came in, Boko Haram occupied 14 local governments and they had hoisted their flags and called the areas their caliphate. But I can assure you that Boko Haram is not holding any local government presently, but they have progressed to using IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and by taking on softer targets — people in mosques, churches, marketplaces, motor parks, killing them in tens, twenties and fifties that you all know about, and killing schoolchildren. So, I think we have made substantial progress in that area. If you know anybody living in Maiduguri or Yobe, he or she will tell that people are going back to their homes; those who moved to Kano, Kaduna or even here in Abuja are now moving back and they are trying to continue with their lives. On the economy, again we were unlucky. We are now a mono-economy and everybody is dependent on oil revenue. The oil price collapsed and we were exposed. From 1999 to 2014, the average price of Nigerian crude that was sold was $100 per barrel, but when we came in, it plummeted to about $30 per barrel and now it is between $40 and $50 per barrel. At some stage, I got the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to give me a list of the things we have been spending our foreign exchange on and it showed food items such as tomato puree, grains, rice, wheat and even toothpicks. I didn’t believe it and I still don’t believe it because if he said we were building so many factories, buying essential raw materials and spare parts machinery, I would have believed it. But to show me that what we were consuming majorly was just food items? I believe that Nigerians from the eastern part of this country, from the west and north, about 60 per cent of them, eat what they produce because they cannot afford to buy foreign food. So, what was happening was that people who had plenty of naira, they just filled the papers that they were importing food and were given foreign exchange; they invested the money outside in whatever form. My belief was strengthened when we got into trouble about the import of petroleum products. We conducted a survey and we found out that one-third of what Nigerian marketers claimed to be bringing in, they were not bringing it in. They were just signing the papers and taking the money out. So, people were doing the same thing with food products. But I think subsequently, when we get to the court with some people, you will hear more about it.

Lai Mohammed Spits, 'Buhari Was Advised Not To Reveal Identities Of Looters'

The Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari was advised against revealing the identity of looters due to the legal implications of such an action.

Mohammed disclosed this while featuring on OneYear, a Channels Television Programme to mark the Buhari’s administration’s first year in office.

It would be recalled that the President had promised to publish the identity of looters during his democracy day speech.

He, however, reneged on the promise during his address yesterday and rather gave the responsibility to the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Reacting to the development, Mohammed said, “Yes, he initially said that he’ll give specific details about recovered loot but he was advised against doing so for legal reasons.

“Of course, for obvious legal reasons. The president said he was going to release the amount recovered and where the recovered assets are.

“Yes he initially said he will name looters, but he was advised against doing so for legal reasons. Of course, he has a right to reverse himself on that.

4 Important Lessons From Buhari's Democracy Day Speech

On Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari delivered his first Democracy day speech. To some the speech was inspiring, to others it was bland.

Here are 4 things i learned from Buhari's Independence Day Speech:

1. The President didn't do his homework

Muhammadu Buhari just wanted to be President because he has always felt that he is ''the only man for the job''. He made no effort in preparing himself to govern Nigeria.

2. Buhari is not ready to take responsibility for anything that goes wrong

One year after, his inauguration the President is still playing the blame game. He's not prepared to take responsibility for anything even the padding on his own budget .

3. Buhari is a yesterday man

The President has no fresh idea. He has no no clue on how to tackle the economic mess facing his administration.

4. Nigerians will pay more tax

President Buhari announced the launching of the ''most ambitious social protection programme'' in Nigerian history during his speech. The question is ''who is going to fund it?'' - the already broke government or the almost depleted middle class?

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “Despite President Buhari’s electoral promise to reduce petrol pump price from
the N86.50 per litre that he met it and make life more bearable for Nigerians, he increased the price of petrol to N145, increased electricity tariff in spite of lack of power supply.”

On his first year in office, Wike said despite the challenges faced by his administration, he said that the successes already recorded will be surpassed in his second year in office.

President Buhari Reveals His Biggest Shock in Office

President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja yesterday, told editors and newspaper executives in a brief interview to mark the administration’s first year in office that the biggest shock he had during the past year as President was the realisation that Nigeria had over the years squandered all its precious foreign exchange on the importation of food items and other frivolous items including tooth picks.

President Buhari said last year, when oil prices fell to $40 per barrel, he summoned Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele and asked to see what it was that Nigerians were buying with foreign exchange.

“My greatest shock is to found that most of the imports were food items”.

Nigeria, he said, discovered too late that it was over dependent on a mono-economy.
He said, “Up to 2013 we were earning on average over $100 per barrel from oil but by fabulous coincidence, it went down to about $30 per barrel when we came in. There was no money to import food. For me it was the biggest shock.”

FG Places 2 Governors On Security Watch

Federal Government may have placed two governors from the Southern part of the country on a watch-list.

A source from the Presidency told Sunday Sun that the governors are from the South-west and South-south.

The decision to place them under watch, the source said stemmed from their activities which, he said, were “clearly anti-Nigeria.

Their activities have negative security implications.”

According to Sun Newspaper, the governors would no longer be allowed to travel overseas unless they are given permission by key security outfits and officials. The order to this effect, the source said, had been handed to all security organisations and relevant offices. The directive was said to have been issued three weeks ago.

The source said the memo was explicit that any of the affected governors must, as a matter of compulsion, “see the Director General in Abuja” before being allowed to embark on foreign trips.

One Year in Office: 5 Major Achievements Of President Buhari

Exactly one year today, President Mohammadu Buhari, in Abuja, the Nation's capital, took over the mantle of leadership from Goodluck Jonathan – after he conceded defeat at the March 28, 2015 Presidential elections. It was the fourth shot at the presidency for ex-military commander Buhari. Goodluck Jonathan, a Bayelsa-born politician ruled the nation for 6 years.Jonathan came to power, promising to take Nigeria to greater height through his Transformation Agenda. He assumed office, following the death of his predecessor, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010.

One year down the lane, President Buhari came into power with the mantra of 'Change'. His administration was hinged on tackling corruption, unemployment and terrorism. For the staunch supporters of the administration, Buhari has done exceedingly well in the following key areas: National security, corruption, economy, governance, national image.

National Security:
The President ran his political campaigns on the restoration of national security. At the time he took over power, Boko Haram, the deadly terrorist cell that had killed thousands of Nigerians and destroyed inestimable valuables, was occupying 14 local government areas in the North-East. Today, the 14 local government areas have not only been reclaimed by the military, there is also free movement in the areas. Perhaps, one piece of cheery news that excited the government was the rescue of one of the 219 Chibok schools girls, Amina Ali, abducted by Boko Haram two years ago.

FULL TEXT OF PRESIDENT BUHARI’S DEMOCRACY DAY SPEECH

President buhari’s democracy speech, May 29,2016.

My compatriots,

It is one year today since our administration came into office. It has been a year of triumph, consolidation, pains and achievements. By age, instinct and experience, my preference is to look forward, to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead and rededicate the administration to the task of fixing nigeria. But i believe we can also learn from the obstacles we have overcome and the progress we made thus far, to help strengthen the plans that we have in place to put nigeria back on the path of progress.
We affirm our belief in democracy as the form of government that best assures the active participation and actual benefit of the people. Despite the many years of hardship and disappointment the people of this nation have proved inherently good, industrious tolerant, patient and generous.

The past years have witnessed huge flows of oil revenues. From 2010 average oil prices were $100 per barrel. But economic and security conditions were deteriorating. We campaigned and won the election on the platform of restoring security, tackling corruption and restructuring the economy. On our arrival, the oil price had collapsed to as low as $30 per barrel and we found nothing had been kept for the rainy day. Oil prices have been declining since 2014 but due to the neglect of the past, the country was not equipped to halt the economy from declining.

The infrastructure, notably rail, power, roads were in a decrepit state. All the four refineries were in a state of disrepair, the pipelines and depots neglected.

Huge debts owed to contractors and suppliers had accumulated. Twenty-seven states could not pay salaries for months. In the north-east, boko haram had captured 14 local governments, driven the local authorities out, hoisted their flags. Elsewhere, insecurity was palpable; corruption and impunity were the order of the day. In short, we inherited a state near collapse.

On the economic front, all oil dependent countries, nigeria included, have been struggling since the drop in prices. Many oil rich states have had to take tough decisions similar to what we are doing. The world, nigeria included has been dealing with the effects of three significant and simultaneous global shocks starting in 2014:
a 70% drop in oil prices.
Global growth slowdown.
Normalization of monetary policy by the united states federal reserve.

Buhari’s 7 Mistakes In His 1st Year – Premium Times

A year ago, Muhammadu Buhari was Nigeria’s Rorschach test, upon whom Nigerians could project their disparate yearnings, following widespread disenchantment with the administration of Goodluck Jonathan.

To govern, however, is to choose, and the choices the leader of this diverse entity called Nigeria makes in a 12-month period, are what has largely revealed his personality.

Like any new leader, especially one dogged by security threats and plummeting economic indices, President Buhari wishes he could have had it less tough.

Mr. Buhari stated earlier this year that he wished he hadn’t been elected president at a time Nigeria was grappling with severe insecurity and low crude oil prices at the international markets.

“But I say why me? Why is it that it is when they have spent all the money, when they made the country insecure that I returned?” Mr. Buhari lamented in a February 5 interview with Al-Jazeera. “Why didn’t I come when the treasury was full? Oil price was over $140 per barrel and when I came, it slipped down to $30.
Why me?”

Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo said he believed the death sentence would not act as a deterrent.

They were trained by the Somalia-based Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Omisore hits back at EFCC: Declaring me wanted was senseless and born out of vendetta

Iyiola Omisore, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, has hit back at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a tool being used against the opposition by the federal government. Mr. Omisore spoke through a statement issued yesterday stressing that the EFCC's decision to declare him wanted was senseless and born out of vendetta. He said:

“I read the statement issued by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) purportedly declaring me wanted as an attempt by that organization and its leadership to tarnish my image.
“That statement, if indeed it was issued by the EFCC, is the height of mischief and a deliberate attempt to assassinate my character. It is now very clear that the EFCC is indeed playing out the script of persecuting and harassing perceived opposition groups in the country.
“To be sure, there is no basis for the EFCC’s so-called statement. Only on Tuesday, May 24, we appeared in court with the EFCC asking for permission of the court for an extension of time in the preliminary objection to a suit filed against me. “The Managing Director of Firmex Gill, which the EFCC joined in their case, indemnified me from the company’s contracts and any such obligations.
“In other words, there is nothing related to me in the company’s contract deal with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The company has even sued ONSA for its inability to pay the balance of the contract so awarded to it.
“Therefore, I am not aware of any issue relating to a contract of N700 million. There was no issue of N700 million anywhere. The relationship between the company and ONSA is civil and contractual, which has n nothing to do with me,” Mr. Omisore said in his statement.

Garba Shehu: 9 key milestones in President Buhari’s first year

Twelve months ago, President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He came to power following the decisive victory of his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC over the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP and its candidate, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The victory ended the 16-year reign of the PDP.

President Buhari came to office amidst massive hope and expectation at home and abroad, that here at last was a leader who would stop the slide and lead Nigeria to progress, development and the realization of her destiny. The mood all over Nigeria, the continent and the world at the time he took over was euphoric.

In line with the promises made, Nigeria under Muhammadu Buhari has begun to show that it will be a radically different country than one the world had become used to. Here is a proof of that:

Promise of Transparency and Accountability

A promise kept by the President is of a government that not only preached but also practiced transparency and accountability. The President and the Vice President made public their assets as declared before they took office on May 29th.

For the first time in the annals of our Executive-Legislative relations, this country had all ministers nominated screened and passed without any casualty. What is important is that not a single incident was reported involving exchange of money in bribery of parliamentarians. The President’s first budget, the 2016 appropriations bill was passed, even though after some delays, without the usual bribery allegations that attended the passage of budgets. The Senate and the House under their current leadership must themselves be proud of this happening at this time.

While still on the budget, the President must take credit for the exposure of a particular kind of fraud, the padding of budget, itself a known and ongoing practice until the whistle was blown by diligent ministers and parliamentarians. For once, the country has a budget, the 2016 appropriations bill that is rid of added billions ending up in the pockets of officials. By putting these changes in place, the government has established a model for transparency in public expenditure.
