PICTURE:Drogba’s Mom Cooks for Supporters

The mother of Cote d’Ivoire international, Didier Drogba has been cooking for the national team supporters at a makeshift restaurant she set up near the fans’ village in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where the Elephants are playing their Group B games.

Clotilde Drogba, who personally does the traditional home cooking of fried plantain chips, pepper soup, white rice, tomato sauce and attieke, said it was her contribution to nation at the tournament by feeding the supporters so they could have enough strength to cheer the team to final victory, reports AFP.

Every match day, some 60 members of the national committee of the Elephants supporters (CNSE) queue up with empty bowls to collect food free off charge from the mother of the most influential Ivorian player, before heading to the stands to sing and clap.

Rift in Boko Haram as members split

From Sahara Reporters:

There are indications that an ideological feud within the rank and file of the Boko Haram sect may have led to a breakaway faction. The new outfit calls itself ‘Ansaru.’

In a statement circulated in Kano, Ansaru gave its full name is “Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan,” meaning Vanguards for the Protection of Muslims in Black Africa. Its motto is “Jihad Fi Sabilillah,” meaning it is fighting and sacrificing for Allah’s cause. The statement was signed by one Abu Usamata Al’Ansari, who claimed to be its leader.

Ansaru expressed displeasure with Boko Haram’s style of operations, which it described as inhuman to the Muslim Ummah. It vowed to restore dignity and sanity to the “the lost dignity of Muslims in black Africa” and to bring back the dignity of Islam in Nigeria and the Sokoto Caliphate, founded by Othman Dan Fodio in 1804, which spread across Niger Republic, Cameroon and some West African countries.

Ansaru’s logo shows the Qur’an, with a gun on both sides; attached to the guns are black flags with the inscription, “There is no deity but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger”.

The statement said, “For the first time, we are glad to announce to the public the formation of this group that has genuine basis. We will have dispassionate look into everything, to encourage what is good and see to its spread and to discourage evil and try to eliminate it.

WARNING: South Africa(Leaky) Condoms Coming to Nigeria.

Sello Mokhalipi, an AIDS activist from the Treatment Action Campaign said "we had people flocking in, coming to report that the condoms had burst while they were having sex. We poured water into the condoms and they were leaking, not just in one place, they were leaking like a sieve, Looking at them, you can see there are small pores." - Punch News.

The worry is that these FREE Condoms will find their way into Nigeria People will want to make money from them.

.."The lady confessed that when the JUMAT ended she actually became unhappy and afraid that she was going to kill so many Muslims who came out from the FCTA premises to pray..."

What could have been another Boko Haram tragic incident this year, was averted over the weekend, by staff of a private security firm, Encouragers Security company Limited, thwarted attempt by a female suicide bomber, suspected member of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram from gaining entrance into the complex of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) with explosives.

The incident which happened on Friday, last week, during working hours , send fears into the spine of thousands of workers who were aware of the development making them to hurriedly close from work before the usual 4 pm official closing hours Daily Champion learnt from reliable sources that the slim fair -in complexion lady in her 20s who hails from Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, where the FCT minister also hails from was arrested by the security men at the gate with two explosives items.

The FCTA complex which the sect had attempted bombing houses the offices of the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed; Minister of State FCT Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina as well as thousands of other workers.According to the source, the fairly looking leady had arrived at the area 11 around noon from Dei-Dei a suburb of the FCT where she passed a night upon arrival in the FCT. She was said be a first time visitor to Abuja and could not locate the FCTA therefore, had to a hire a taxis that brought her to the target.

When she arrived, she found the security arrangement hard to penetrate and she quickly contacted her co travelers in the ill fated project but she was told to wait then, she decided to be loitering waiting for the next instruction from her sponsors. The plot by hers sponsors was to keep her till their expected arrival from Kano after the 2 pm Jumat prayers would have been over and then, instruct her to fellow the crowd that usually prays outside the premises inside unchecked, to pave way for them to effectively detonate the bomb. According to the source when the next instruction from her sponsors delayed in coming, the visibly worried attempted in entering the complex through the gate meant for only motorist then she was asked by the private guard where she was going.

She could not satisfy the guard about her mission with her poorly spoken English which made the security man to suspect her motive. She was said to have managed to inform the security man that she was waiting for her brother, at this point the guard ask her to identify herself and she said she was coming from Kano this made security guy curious as the bomber was quickly arrested. Our source told us that the lady confessed that when the JUMAT ended she actually became unhappy and afraid that she was going to kill so many Muslims who came out from the FCTA premises to pray.

Our correspondent further learnt that when the FCT Minister heard about the incident he ordered that the lady be brought to his official residence where he was at the moment and upon confession of the planned attack the female bomber was handed -over to the Police Special Anti- robbery Squared (SARS). While she was being detained at the SARS office in Guzape, District, her sponsors gut wind of it and made attempt to bomb the SARS office in order to prevent her from revealing important information.

The House of Representatives has reportedly asked the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Patrick Ekeji, over some of the Commission’s spendings, including N1.2 million for a Facebook account.

Chief Ekeji will be asked to explain to a high profile investigation panel set up by the House of Representatives over allegations and financial misappropriation and abuse of office how the sum of N3.7 billion that was given to the Commission for the 10th All Africa Games that was staged in Maputo in 2011 was spent.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, “He (Chief Ekeji) is expected to defend how he transferred monies to 19 sports federation; N1,200,000.00 (One million, two hundred thousand naira) used in opening Facebook account for the National Sport Commission; N182, 124, 179,000.00 used in rehabilitating the National Stadium in Lagos, and another N117,875,820.95 used in rehabilitating the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (Liberty Stadium) Ibadan. ASUU To Call Off Strike On Wednesday

The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be called off tomorrow. To this end, the leadership of the union is billed to meet at the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada, to review the strike and outcome of dialogue with the Federal Government. ASUU, last week, met with the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai in Abuja to resolve grey areas in the contentious ASUU agreement.

The meeting could not produce the desired results as the lecturers turned down the minister’s pleas to end the strike. Before the meeting, Senate, as part of moves to get ASUU to call of the strike, passed a bill elongating the retirement age of lecturers from 60 to 70 years.

The increase in the retirement was contained in ASUU’s agreement signed by government some years ago. Other items in the agreement include revamping the decaying infrastructure in universities, increased research funding and enhanced emoluments.

Although the Federal Government signed the agreement, it had refused to honour it, leading to recurring strikes by ASUU. Speaking to Daily Sun, an official of ASUU who pleaded anonymity revealed that significant inroads had been made in resolving the disagreement with government. He said: “We are almost at the end of the strike. Unless anything crops up we hope to call off the strike on Tuesday (tomorrow). “We will meet at the University of Abuja on that Tuesday and I think the meeting will agree to end the strike.”

Asked if the Federal Government had accepted to implement the union’s agreement, he replied:

“What I can tell you is that we have made some strides. We have a minister who, to some extent, is not playing politics with the agreement unlike what we had in the past.”

"We’ll attack Sokoto", Boko Haram warns Sultan, Tambuwal, others

Kano Bombings
ABUL-Qaqa, the spokesman of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnati Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram sent a threat message to Sultan of Sokoto, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and Sokoto State acting Governor to facilitate the release of its members or face possible attack worse than the Kano attack.

Qaqa, who spoke to journalists on phone yesterday said: “This is an open letter to the emir of Sokoto (Sultan of Sokoto) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar 111, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal and the Acting Governor of Sokoto State.

“Before we visited Kano, we wrote open letter to senior citizens there on the imperative of releasing our members but nobody cares to talk. Indeed, we sent three warnings to Kano before we strike,” Qaqa said.

“What happened in Kano will be inevitable in Sokoto unless you (Sultan and others) intervene and ensure the immediate and unconditional release of our members who were specifically arrested in the city of Sokoto on Thursday,” Qaqa said.

Qaqa faulted the call for dialogue by President Goodluck Jonathan. “There is gross inconsistency in all the proclamations of the Nigerian leader. Our members are being trailed and killed on one hand, and on the other hand, some people are telling us to surrender our arms and come out. This is impossible,” he said.
A question to Nigerian Police, if Kabir Sokoto was tracked through his mobile phone signal then why can't they track Abu-Qaqa who always communicate with journalist. Did Nigerian Police have such technology?

KANO What Next? As Igbos and Lebanese Communities Leave!

The silence from Our Northern Leaders and their lately mere condemnation of the activities of the Islamic terror group, Boko Haram rather speaks volume.

It was sad and annoying hearing some politicians, traditional rulers and some statesmen yesterday in Kano appealing to Igbos and Lebanese communities who are leaving Kano in drove to stay back.
An effort to far from been enough and seen by many as been insensitive to the disaster falling our city.

"A man that his house is on fire, does not purse RATs".
21+years ago, these communities who have were threatened by some religious zealous groups, the who-is-who in Kano played low, as if nothing was wrong. Hundreds of people were brutally murdered without genuine provocation.

Kano was a city that manufacturing businesses were operating 24/7. Our women and young ladies were cooked rice, yam, beans, rice and corn meals, local milks and drinks to factory workers and making their money, ALL is gone as a result of ignorance and wickedness of few people.
Till this date, about 105 companies in Challawa, Dakata, Zango, Maimalari, Bompai, Sharada, Hadejia, Zaria and Katsina Roads, Challawa have closed down as a result of insecurity, reckless killings, dwindling work force and ready markets.

"Massive collapse of industries is one of the leading factors responsible for high rate of unemployment among the teeming youths in Kano, it is also contributing to high rate of criminal activities in the state and its environs as unemployed youths are among those used by politicians to cause chaos in the state. Thisday -29 JUNE 2009.

What will remain of our beloved City of Kano after this Boko Haram madness? Who is benefiting from this destructions? One things is certain that Kano state and it's people will be the loser, Allah help us (الله يساعدنا).

REVEALED!!! Father of Baby Born Without Arms and Legs also has No Arms nor Legs

Last week we posted a story on the Baby Born Without Arms, Legs in Bauchi [See earlier story], due to the comments from so many readers of this blog, we decided to follow up on the issue and now we have been able to track the family of the baby.

Although Mallam Ahmadu Didda is physically challenged, he and Rukkaiya his wife had previously had four children who were all ‘normal’ children with no deformity whatsoever. But the couple’s attempt at having their fifth child was a different story entirely, which invariably brought them into the news.

The Fulani couple lives at Dunomari in Sakwa village in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi. About two weeks ago, January 13, 2012 to be precise, Rukaiyya, delivered a baby girl without arms and legs, which stunned the people of the sleepy village as the birth was a strange occurrence to them and many. The baby, named Fatima, apart from the fact that she is without arms and legs, looks healthy.

Fatima’s condition, according to medical experts is called phocomelia, a congenital birth defect in which the hands and feet are attached to abbreviated arms and legs. The bones of the arms, the experts say, may be extremely shortened and even absent and in some cases, while the fingers of the hands may be joined together.

According to Dr Obiora Kelvin of Reemee Medicare Nigeria Limited, Bauchi, an extreme case of phocomelia, like that of little Fatima, occurred when the upper bones of both the arms and legs are absent such that the hands and feet of the affected individual will appear attached directly to the body. This, he said, was called tetraphocomelia.

Northern Governors Declare War On Boko Haram

GOVERNORS of the 19 Northern states yesterday, rose from a meeting at 2 a.m. with Vice President Namadi Sambo, vowing to put an end to activities of the Boko Haram sect.

The governors noted that after an intense brainstorming at the meeting which held at the Aguda House, residence of the VP in the Presidential Villa, it became clear that what the sect intends to do is to divide the country.

To identify and crush the group, the governors said they have resolved to "go back to the old traditional way of gathering information and gathering intelligence by using people."

In attendance at the meeting of the 19 northern state governors with the Vice President were the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Defence and the representative of National Security Adviser.

Speaking to journalists at the State House immediately after the five hours meeting, Niger State Governor and Chairman of the Northern governors forum, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, admitted that the federal government was dealing with a well-trained group of people who are not many by the understanding of the intelligence community but noted that 'they (Boko Haram) are well trained and their motive is really to disintegrate many parts of the country; even they don't recognise even the borders that we have.'

He said, 'We have discussed generally the terrorist activities of the so called Boko Haram, identified and try to define who they are and, fundamentally, what we discovered is that what they want is possible division of the country.

'We understand they do not recognise the constitution of Nigeria and so any attempt by anybody to either move to the south or to the north in the name of religion or in the name of regional sentiment is like making these people succeed without making any effort.

'Because their efforts like any terrorist is to create a situation where people will react by themselves so that they achieve their objective and that is why all of us, particularly the governors of 19 states of the north, agreed that each one of us must go beyond the normal duty to assure people of their safety and to do those things that would further create the confidence of the people so that they stay where they are and continue to do what they are doing.

'And with regard to what has happened in Kano in particular, we must be very conscious, we must go back to the old traditional way of gathering information, gathering intelligence by using people.

'We all know any one of us who has grown up in this area will understand that in the olden days, any stranger that comes to an area, people know who he is. He is identified and reported appropriately and we must do that.

"People who come to start renting a place and people who come to buy land; all these, we must now be very security conscious.

'I have been telling people that I grew up in a compound and never saw the door of that house locked but now with the changing situation, we must understand what is happening and really take appropriate action and that is what we have all pledged to do and to support the federal government in its activities and for it also to support us in our activities.

'And we understand that the security agencies will need extra support that we can give and all of us must become security agents too. And when I say all of us, all Nigerians particularly those who can understand what issues are all about.

' So when the President said we must police ourselves that is the understanding that all of us are now involved and until we are able to pass this emergency situation'.

Asked if there had been some findings on the sponsorship of the terrorists group, following allegations that some governors even had a hand in the sponsorship, the governor said, 'No. I am not aware of that yet but what we understand is that most of them were trained outside in countries like Yemen and other places and that they participated in some other countries' issues.

'So that is why we must go the extra mile to ensure and we understand they are well funded even if not necessarily from Nigerians but that they are linked to Al-qaeda and so we must go the extra miles to do things.

KOGI:A State with Two Recognized Governors.

Two governors are actively in office in Kogi, following the supreme court ruling yesterday, sacking former gov Ibrahim Idris and the Federal Attorney general directive for state House speaker to take over, Kogi state government house.

State House Speaker, Mr. Abdullahi Bello was sworn in as the acting governors of Kogi State by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Nasiru Ajanah yesterday.

For the same position, Idris Wada and his deputy-elect, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi, were sworn in at the Government House as governor and deputy governor respectively by the President, Customary Court of Appeal, Mr. Shaibu Atadoga. (Punch New).

It is beyond imagination the type of Political office holders we have in Nigeria. what on earth was the Attorney general of the Federation (AGF), Mohammed Adoke thinking when he made that blanket announcement.
The constitution gives the position of the governor to speaker in a case like this, to avoid vacuum, but AGF of Nigeria is much aware that Kogi elected a new governor, Ibrahim Idris, few months ago.

We hope this may not lead to any lose of lives and appeal to the AGF of Nigeria Mr. Mohammed Adoke, to ensure that this impending disaster is averted immediately.

Chioma Nwokolo,a Banker, seeks help to combat deadly ailment

Life for Chioma Nwokolo, a native of Awka-Etiti in Anambra State, couldn’t have been better. The pretty mother of two had dreams, one of which was to attain the peak of her career as a banker. At 33, and living happily with her husband, Chima, the lady, a former staff of Awka-Etiti Micro Finance Bank, lived and faced life with gusto like every other fulfilled woman.

But her life took a sad, dramatic twist and her joy was shattered late last year when she was diagnosed with chronic renal failure. With her condition worsening daily, she urgently needs the sum of 35, 000 dollars from the general public to finance her trip to India for a kidney transplant. The sad twist that marred her happiness and almost made her an invalid started in February 2011.

Despite having two beautiful children, Chioma still looked forward to being blessed with more. It was with this mindset that she hurriedly went for a pregnancy test when she started experiencing what she suspected to be pregnancy symptoms. When the results came out negative, she became alarmed and alerted her husband, a transporter in Lagos.

“I was having constant headache and was vomiting. I was happy to be pregnant and immediately went for a test to confirm my suspicion,” she said. After a series of tests at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Chioma was handed what sounded like a death knell: what she was experiencing were symptoms of chronic renal failure. The prognosis she got later from the hospital changed the course of her life and has sent the entire household down a sorrowful path. The frail looking lady disclosed that her condition allegedly worsened after a consultant at the teaching hospital prescribed a drug for her. This got her admitted in a hospital for over a month.

Her words: “I started having shortage of breath and blood. Everything just changed automatically after I took the drugs.”
It was a weak, fragile-looking Chioma that visited the corporate headquarters of The Sun Publishing Limited, supported by her husband earlier this week. She was in excruciating pains, exhausted and she spoke with so much difficulty. Most of the talking was done by her husband, who disclosed that he has exhausted his savings on his wife’s ailment and had to close his business to basically take care of her.

After settling his wife into a comfortable position on a chair, an obviously distraught Chima, the husband, buried his face in his hands. It was with bloodshot eyes and an unsteady voice that he later answered the questions asked by the reporter. With shaky hands, he rummaged through a polythene bag and produced two pictures of his wife. One showed her lying almost lifeless on a hospital bed and the other, which had little resemblance to the other, showed a beautiful, bespectacled and light complexioned woman. The two pictures were no doubt, world apart. “My sister, this is where life has pushed us to. Look at my wife, a very pretty lady. She has been reduced to almost a child that needs help at all times,” he said.

Chima explained that after he learnt about his wife’s condition, he brought her to Lagos for good medical care. He disclosed that between February 2011 and January 2012, he has spent over a million naira to procure drugs for his wife and for her dialysis sessions. The dialysis, he disclosed, cost N45, 000, per session while the drugs are very expensive. As a result of the financial crisis the family is facing, Chioma now undergoes dialysis treatment once in two weeks instead of thrice a week. The distraught husband lamented that his wife’s family members have abandoned them to their fate, adding that they told him to seek spiritual help for her.
However, their search for healing in spiritual homes and churches has also, not yielded any positive result or given Chioma reprieve from the ailment ravaging her body.

“They said I should be the one to take care of her as her husband. They just abandoned us to go through this alone. She has been through nine dialysis and needs to do more. I have closed down because of this problem. We have been to several churches where miracles are supposedly taking place all the time but the situation has not changed,” he lamented. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the situation, Chima is optimistic that God would intervene in the life of his wife. He’s appealing to well meaning Nigerians to help save her life.

With a sombre look on her face and wincing in pain, Chioma told Daily Sun that her husband has been her only source of strength. She also disclosed that her two children are presently living with her brother in Onitsha, Anambra State. Chioma can be reached through her numbers - 08052269443 and 08095125761. The Islamic terror group, Boko Haram's leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau have given condition for peace and their engaging in any peace discussion, is for President Goodluck Jonathan to "repent to Islam".
Imam Abubakar Shekau in his latest youtube post said that "If Jonathan does not repent as a Muslim, even if I die myself, Jonathan's going to see. He is looking at me like I am nobody, but he will see".
Imam Shekau said that "Allah instruct him to kill like a chicken". He was speaking partly in Arabic, English and the Hausa language.

"We are killing police officers, we are killing soldiers and other government people who are fighting Allah and Christians who are killing Muslims and talking badly about our Islamic religion."

"I am not against anyone, but if Allah asks me to kill someone, I will kill him and I will enjoy killing him like I am killing a chicken".

Boko Haram: MASSOB threatens to retaliate if…

MOVEMENT for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, yesterday, threatened to retaliate against Boko Haram, which has negatively affected the security situation of the country. The group added that it would not hesitate to clampdown on the activities of the sect, if necessary steps were not taken by the Federal Government and other security agencies to checkmate the operations and excesses of the sect.

Director of Information of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, warned that should harassment and attacks of its members by the Islamic sect continued uncontrollably, it might be pushed into violent acts, describing the Boko Haram’s attacks in the country as a child’s play compared to what it would do if no action was taken against the sect by security agencies. Madu, who is also the Leader Ebonyi South Region 1, expressed dismay over the alleged killing of Ndigbo by Boko Haram, warning that it would no longer fold its arms and watch its indigenes brutally killed by the Boko Haram members.

He warned: “South East is very peaceful now but the Nigeria Military personnel are trying to provoke us. We know what the Boko Haram members are doing in the North and there is supposed to be a reprisal attacks here in the South East but we have kept silent not because we don’t know what to do but simply because we don’t want to shade blood. “We believe in non-violent approach to issues but they are pushing us to the wall; they are provoking MASSOB to become violent and if we decide to resort to violent this time around, even the Nigeria military cannot contain our attacks. “The Boko Haram issue is a child’s play compared to what we can do if we are provoked into violence. I tell you the entire Nigeria would be on fire.

“We don’t expect the military to accept that they killed our members, last Sunday at Onitsha; they swoop on our men while they were holding their meetings in preparation for Chief Ojukwu’s burial. They went at their different meeting venue and arrested our members but at a particular venue, the members resisted the arrest and the military personnel opened fire on them”.

“What they are trying to do by denying that they killed our members is simply aimed at covering their shameful act. The Military Commander at Enugu is not in Onitsha, so he based his comment on what the officer in Onitsha told him but we have all the facts. They did not just kill them; they killed them and took away their corpse”.

“Very soon, we are going to come out with the whole fact, to tell the world the truth of the whole matter. There is no way we will just allege that the military killed our men when they didn’t. They admitted that, they arrested our men”.

”We still maintain that they killed some of our men. As am speaking with you, some of the wounded once are still at the hospital. They should please release the dead body of our members to us, so that we can give them a befitting burial.”

THE BOKO HARAM STORY:One You May Not Have Heard Of

I found this on facebook .it sure is a detailed view of the boko haram story

Dialog NG Wrote: A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE GENESIS OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENCE
(Note: this is not an attempt to justify the Boko haram insurgence which I and many other Muslim maintain is a transgression of the limits set by Islam. It is rather an attempt to understand the genesis behind the violent SinParties perpetrated by the group that is claiming innocent lives by the day, preventing peaceful coexistence and threatening the whole of Nigerian national security and unity).

Boko haram started in 2002 as a peaceful Islamic splinter group that nurtured a controversial ideology against western education. The group never called itself boko haram but was named by the public and given a raving attention by the Nigerian media when the sect leader Muhammad Yusuf declared and propagated that boko (western education) was haram (sacrilegious). Among the reasons he gave were some theories he regarded as contradictory to the priciples of Islam. An example is the theory human evolution found in western science books which excluded the divine hands of God in the creation of man and the universe. This, he explained opposed a fundamental principle of Islam which holds God as the omnipotent creator of the universe and all it contains. Other reason he sighted was the immorality that youths commonly engage in at western schools such as semi Unclad dressing, fornication, alcoholism and substance abuse etc. He also castigated the western education system as being deficient in solving the issue of joblessness among the Nigerian youths but rather robs them of the time needed to skill themselves in non white collar jobs.

His ideology was challenged by many Islamic scholars including his former teachers who regarded the western education as a thorny tree that has its good and bad side but maintained that Islam allows and encourages the quest for knowledge in its entire ramification. Although attempt to bring him to order by these scholars fell on deaf ears, he continued to lure many especially the youth who were mostly shackled by the bondage of escalating poverty and joblessness. Many were said to have dropped out of schools and took to menial jobs and trading. Many tore their school certificate although in an interview with BBC Hausa, he denounced the allegation of ever telling any of his members to discard his certificate.

The sect continued to propagate their ideology and also called for the creation of an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. They continued to operate as a benign and non violent group until when the police killed a number of its members (about 14) during a funeral procession on the flimsy ground of not using a helmet.

The sect leader wrote series of letter to the Borno state government and the Borno commissioner of police. He called for the compensation of the family of victims killed extrajudiciously by the police during the funeral procession. He followed his letter with practical visits to the police but all appeal fell on deaf ears. He then called severally to the IG of police and the Yaradua administration to intervene but to date, nothing was done to the culprits.

He began to send threat to the government and the police. He castigated the Yara’ dua government in an out and called Yaradua an oppressor and declared the government as unjust. For those Muslim leaders and scholar who opposed his threat against the government, he declared them as hypocrite and even declared some as unbelievers. He and his member began to arm themselves while receiving support from many who sympathized with them and had grievance against the jungle justice of the Nigerian police. He was said to have received sympathy even by some non Muslims who were alleged to have bailed him out on some occasions that he was detained by the police on the ground of perceived breach of peace due to his threats to the Yar’adua governement.

According to Dr. Aliyu Tilde “Possession of arms is a crime, a serious one for that matter, because if for any reason all the 165 million Nigerians will resort to possessing firearms, then there will be endless bloodshed that will not appease God in anyway. Government owes other citizens the responsibility to check the group. In checking any such excesses, however, government should have followed the law and respect the fundamental rights of citizens. It can arrest and charge BH leaders and members with treason, possession of firearms, etc. But Yar'adua regime did none of these; instead, it chose to exterminate the group. Had government adopted due process and patiently abided by it throughout its conflict with the group, things wouldn't have reached this level. But it chose to err first, and its error compelled the group to adopt the dangerous strategy of operating underground.

Dr. aliyu further said “Let us not forget the “finish them” order that President Yar’adua gave to the security forces that morning when he was leaving for Brazil. In fact, he even timed it that by 4.00pm that day, the job must have been completed. In Maiduguri, Government went for total extermination of the group without recourse to any due process. The world was witness to how their centre was leveled by soldiers; Muhammad Yusuf, their leader, was executed; Muhammad Foi, a former member of Sheriff’s cabinet, was executed on the street after his arrest”

Muhammad Fugu, the father in-law of Muhammad Yusuf who never part of the group was declared wanted by the police. He brought himself willingly to the police station where he was killed on the spot without any interrogation but for simply being a relative to Muhammad Yusuf’s wife. “The police and the military went about killing anyone that resembled their members to the extent that people started shaving their beards en masse; etc. A senior police officer was reported in the press saying that he cannot guarantee the life of anyone wearing such features. So many were arrested along with their wives. They remain in prison to date without trial. Extermination is still the strategy of government in dealing with the group. Video footage of Mr. Yusuf’s extrajudicial muder soon went viral, but no one was tried and punished for the crime”.

“When the group protested at a police station in Bauchi did not actually necessitate an all-out war against it. In Bauchi, it was estimated that over seventy members of the group were massacred at their centre behind the airport. Apparently, they were even unaware of the conflict at Dutsen Tanshi police station that started that morning. By evening, the state commissioner for special duties led a team of government agents that leveled the centre with bulldozers. Passengers at the Yankari Park in Bauchi also witnessed how eight unarmed members were arrested and killed instantly by soldiers as they were boarding a bus to Maiduguri. The governor, Isa Yuguda, would later claim credit for the “decisive way” in which his government dealt with the group in his state”.

The world condemned the actions of the authorities on the highhandedness they showed. The government apologized to the United Nations after it was condemned for the human right abuses, promising that it will bring the perpetrators to book. Actually, it did nothing. No disciplinary action was taken against anyone until when Boko Haram bombed the Police Headquarters in Abuja in 2010. Two police officers were then reportedly dismissed from service for the murder of the Boko Haram leader.

Since the government chose to negotiate with bullets and bombs, Boko Haram therefore went underground. It took time to heal its wounds, regroup and re-strategize before returning to revenge what Imam Shekau described as the “the injustice meted against it.” Seeking revenge, Boko Haram targeted the police, the military and local politicians

When it reappeared in 2010, Boko Haram started to selectively kill people that assisted the authorities in identifying them. The initial victims were grassroots traditional rulers- all of them Muslims, the lawanis as they are called in Borno. Among the high profile killings made in this category were those of the junior brother to the Shehu of Borno, the state chairman of the ruling party in the state and its gubernatorial candidate during the last elections. After killing the first few, Boko Haram issued a warning that it will go after all those that aided the authorities in persecuting them. These included a number of ulama, traditional rulers, and the three governors of Borno, Gombe and Bauchi states. It demanded pubic apologies from the governors and got it from the last two.

Immediately the group started its selective killings, the ulama realized their vulnerability and none of them dared again to condemn the group publicly or repeat to assign it the Kharijite nomenclature. At a point, Boko Haram also issued a warning that they will also go against anyone who publicly condemns its activities, including journalists who do not live by the ethics of their profession in reporting it's activities.

The very day their massacre started in 2009, the Bauchi State government sought and obtained from the ulama in the town a fatwa which served as a license for authorities to kill Boko Haram members without recourse to justice. Only the most elderly sheikh in town opined differently, insisting that in Islam no soul should be killed without a ruling from a judge. That is why some of the ulama fled the country when Boko Haram staged a return the following year. The governor too has abandoned the Government House and practically relocated to Abuja since he received the death threat.

The government has been unable to protect its informants and other citizens from these attacks. This partially explains the silence of the Muslim community over Boko Haram.

Whatever the case, None of this excuses Boko Haram’s killing of innocents. The group has swayed off the mark and has gone too far when it considered criticisms as attack. By so doing, they instill fear in the population and loose public sympathy. Appeal to its members to put down its weapons and negotiate with government and they will rebut in this standard format: “How can we trust any negotiation with people who are amassing arsenal to attack us

Jean Herskovits, a professor of history at the State University of New York had this to say “Instead, approximately 25 percent of Nigeria’s budget for 2012 is allocated for security, even though the military and police routinely respond to attacks with indiscriminate force and killing. Indeed, according to many Nigerians I’ve talked to from the northeast, the army is more feared than Boko Haram. Influential Nigerians from Maiduguri, where Boko Haram is centered, pleaded with Mr. Jonathan’s government in June and July not to respond to Boko Haram with force alone”

There is nothing, once said the UN Secretary-General after the bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja last year, which cannot be amicably resolved through dialogue. The government has to accept full responsibility and start a genuine process of reconciliation and rehabilitation. The Muslim society as whole must continue to condemn this baseless killings and check the activities of extremists – mainly youths who lack the wisdom to see things in different shades. They need to be guided accordingly by leaders of their sects and relevant authorities. Otherwise, they will continue drifting away from the centre until they reach a point where they dream of a whole world drowned in an ocean of human blood. Certainly, this will not please God who has described Himself as the Most Merciful.

Boko Haram issues new threats

From Vanguard:

The purported leader of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has issued new threats in a message posted on YouTube while also saying last week’s attacks in Kano were over the torture of its members.

“We were responsible,” a voice identified as that of suspected Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau says in audio played over a picture of him. “I ordered it and I will give that order again and again. God gave us victory.”
A purported spokesman for the group had earlier claimed responsibility for coordinated bombings and shootings on January 20 in Kano which left at least 185 people dead.

Police stations were the main targets.

The authenticity of the message could not be independently verified, but the photo matched up with previous ones said to be of Shekau and the voice was similar to earlier recordings.

He says in the message that “we attacked the security formations because our members were arrested and tortured. Our women and children have also been arrested.”

The man said to be Shekau then issued another threat: “They should know that they also have wives and children. We can also abduct them. It is not beyond our powers.

“Soldiers raided an Islamic seminary in Maiduguri and desecrated the Koran. They should bear in mind that they also have primary and secondary schools and universities, and we can also attack them.”

The purported leader of the group blamed for hundreds of deaths also accused the authorities of killing civilians in Friday’s violence.

“After we finished our war, policemen stuck around and started killing civilians and later blamed us,” he said. “We are not fighting civilians, but security forces. We only kill soldiers, policemen and their collaborators.”
Friday’s attacks were the worst yet attributed to Boko Haram and occurred in a city that serves as the economic heart of Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north and a centre of Islamic culture.

Nigerian authorities have shown little sign of being able to stop violence blamed on the group.
Another police station was attacked in Kano on Tuesday night, while an explosion also went off in the city on Thursday. A German engineer was also kidnapped on the outskirts of Kano on Thursday.

It remained unclear however who was behind both of those incidents.
Shekau was seen as Boko Haram’s second-in-command at the time of a 2009 uprising put down by a brutal military assault.

The leader at the time, Mohammed Yusuf, was captured by soldiers and handed over to police, but later killed when officers said he was trying to escape.

Boko Haram went dormant for about a year after the military assault before re-emerging in 2010 with increasingly sophisticated attacks.

It claimed responsibility for the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja that killed at least 25 people.A video posted on YouTube earlier this month was also said to be of Shekau. In the video, the man said to be Shekau issued a message to President Goodluck Jonathan and threatened further violence.

The appearance of the man in the video appeared significantly different than earlier images said to be of the Boko Haram chief, but a Western diplomat said “we assessed it was Shekau.”
