Man bags 2 years imprisonment for stealing fish

A Chief Magistrate Court in Asaba on Thursday sentenced a 30-year old man, Okeke Ekwelor, to two years imprisonment for stealing fish and a wheel-barrow valued at ₦26,000 and ₦12,000 respectively.

The convict was arraigned on September 15 on a one-count charge of stealing.

In the First Information Report filed, Police Prosecutor Augustine Otubu, told the court that Ekwelor committed the offence on August 2 at Abraka market, Asaba, by stealing a basin of fresh fish valued at N26,000 and a wheel-barrow valued at N12,000, property of one Mrs Izuchukwu Okonkwo.

He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Delta, 2006.

The Chief Magistrate, Augustina Monye, said she was satisfied with the confession made by the convict but noted that he was a first time offender and had pleaded for leniency. She thus sentenced Mr Ekwelor to 2 years imprisonment but with an option of ₦30,000 fine.
